Welcome To Bob Heilman's Beachcomber

Heilman’s, a family-owned enterprise, is built on three generations of successful restaurant experience. Grandparents Ross and Elenora Heilman began the family tradition with their first restaurant in Lorain, Ohio in 1920.

Robert Heilman Sr. and Eva Nelle Heilman continued the legacy by founding Bob Heilman’s Beachcomber on Clearwater Beach in 1948. Back then, Mandalay Avenue, which runs parallel to the beach and in front of the restaurant, was a sandy and unpaved road.

From the start, this white tablecloth restaurant that was famous for its “Back-to-the-Farm” fried chicken enticed customers near and far.

Fire destroyed the 11-year-old restaurant in 1959, but Bob Heilman Sr. showed indomitable spirit in spite of tragedy. He immediately opened a dining room nearby and carried on business as usual during the 11 months it took to rebuild.

Robert Heilman Jr, president, chief operating officer and owner since 1984 has continued the family tradition alongside wife Sheri. With his vast food and wine knowledge, he developed new menu creations and expanded the wine list. At more than 700 bottles, the list is now award winning and continues to grow with new and exciting wines from all over the world. Bob and Sheri’s passion for wine translated into the creation of their own wine label, FoxyRock, a Pinot Noir first planted in 2001 from their vineyard in the Willamette Valley with the current vintage available on the wine list.

The restaurant expansion continued in 1994 when Bob and Sheri opened Bobby’s Bistro and Wine Bar, named after their son and Bob Sr. and Nelle’s only grandson. This west coast-inspired restaurant gave them the opportunity to provide more dining options to their patrons. Customers embraced the new concept from the beginning and still enjoy this light approach to the consumption and enjoyment of what they call the “casual connoisseur”.

The founding philosophy remains as strong today as when the Heilman family began. “We believe in offering our patrons the finest food made from the freshest and best ingredients possible”. The beef is prime, the fish is fresh daily, and the desserts, breads and pastries – including the famous Heilman Hot Fudge – are still made on the premises.

Menus at both restaurants are a composition of both new and traditional dishes. Along with the extensive wine list, you can delight yourself with a handcrafted cocktail made with homemade mixes and fresh herbs, or many local craft brews. The Scotch, bourbon and other sipping menus are like none other.

Today, the hip “Mad Men” atmosphere still attracts food gurus, the style conscious and great celebrities as it has throughout the past seven decades.

If you are looking for the finest in food and drink paired with classic style, Bob Heilman’s Beachcomber is undeniably the place.
